Vesa Oittinen, Ph. D., born in 1951, is Professor at the Aleksanteri Institute of the University of Helsinki. The Institute is one of the major European centres of research of Russia and Eastern Europe (for more information, see: http://www.helsinki.fi/aleksanteri/english/index.html ).

My research focuses on the history of modern philosophy (especially German, Scandinavian, Russian philosophy) and I have published in German, English and Russian beside my native Finnish and Swedish.  My Ph. D. thesis was on the post-structuralist interpretations of Spinoza, other publications include i.a. studies on Marx and Russia, on German Idealism and on Soviet philosophy. Books on Evald Ilyenkov and on the so-called Activity Approach in Soviet philosophy, both in collaboration, are forthcoming in English yet this year from Brill Publishers.
