The Jordan Center's Colloquium Series serves to introduce the most recent work of scholars within the Slavic field.  Participants come from universities across the country and abroad and work in disciplines ranging from history, political science and anthropology to literature and film. In the fourth session of the Spring 2014 Colloquium Series, Peter Holquist will join us from the University of Pennsylvania.

Professor Holquist will share a draft chapter of his manuscript "By Right of War: Imperial Russia and the Discipline and Practice of the 'Laws of War' (1868-1917)."  The chapter, "Codifying the 'Laws of War': Brussels, 1874," examines the 1874 Brussels Conference on laws and customs of land warfare, the first attempt to draft an international convention of the laws of war.  Professor Holquist examines the conference as a culmination of certain Russian political and intellectual developments; international diplomacy among the Great Powers; and, against the general emergence of international law as a discipline throughout Europe.
