Join us on March 31, 2015 for a discussion with Igor Pilshchikov on "The Legacy of Russian Formalism and Contemporary Humanities".
The lecture will discuss the basic ideas of Russian formalism and their later development in the Russian scholarship from the 1960s to the present time. The traditional view, which is focused on the Society for the Study of Poetic Language (Obshchestvo po izucheniiu poeticheskogo iazyka — Opoyaz), will be corrected and supplemented by the synopsis of the achievements of the Moscow Linguistic Circle (Moskovskii lingvisticheskii kruzhok — MLK). Special attention will be paid to the works of Boris Jarcho, Osip Brik, Roman Jakobson, Maksim Kenigsberg, and Grigorii Vinokur, as well as the use of linguistic, semiotic, and statistical methods in literary studies.
Igor Pilshchikov is a lead researcher at the Institute for World Culture at Lomonosov Moscow State University and a senior researcher at Tallinn University. He is the author of Batiushkov and Italian Literature (2003, in Russian), Vocabulary and Phraseology of “Eugene Onegin” (with Igor Dobrodomov, 2008, in Russian), and has published numerous articles on Russian literature, comparative literature, editorial theory, literary theory, verse theory, history of Russian poetic language, cultural semiotics, and digital humanities. Pilshchikov is the founding editor-in-chief of the Fundamental Digital Library of Russian Literature and Folklore (FEB-web.ru) and Russian Virtual Library (RVB.ru), former editor-in-chief of a bilingual journal of Russian and theoretical philology, Philologica, and co-editor of the biannual journal of prosody and poetics, Studia Metrica et Poetica.
