In the current frigid environment of U.S.-Russia relations, there is much debate over Russia’s legitimate strategic interests. Of equal importance for understanding Russian attitudes is a grasp of the values, the moral framework for her foreign policy.

Three leading experts on Russia's "soft power" will explain the roles of the state and the Russian Orthodox Church in formulating this framework of values.

Nikolas K. Gvosdev is a professor of national security studies at the U.S. Naval War College and a senior editor at The National Interest. He is the author or editor of a number of books, including the co-author of The Receding Shadow of the Prophet: The Rise and Fall of Political Islam.

Nadieszda Kizenko is an associate professor at SUNY-Albany, where she researches and teaches Russian history, with a focus on religion and culture. She is the author of A Prodigal Saint: Father John of Kronstadt and the Russian People.

Nicolai N. Petro is a professor of comparative and international politics at the University of Rhode Island. From July 2013 to July 2014, he was a Fulbright Research Scholar affiliated with I. L. Mechnikov National University in Odessa, Ukraine.

Carnegie Council Senior Fellow David Speedie will moderate this event.

The format of the event will be as follows:

6:00 PM – Doors open
6:00 PM – 6:30 PM – Reception
6:30 PM – 7:30 PM – Conversation with Question and Answer Session
