Oleg Kharkhordin speaks on rules of order in Russian society



On October 15, 2014, the Jordan Center welcomed Oleg Kharkhordin with a lecture entitled “A Point of Order! The Troubled Travels of Robert’s Rules of Order from America to Russia, or How Russians Tried to Invent Order Themselves.” Oleg Kharkhordin is a political sociologist and the the Rector of the European University of St. Petersburg, which, as Director Yanni Kotsonis stressed in his introduction, is an institution with a remarkably high concentration of brain power and quality.

As I write this, Moscow is clearing up after the latest Great Patriotic War nostalgia-fest. The Victory Day parade is a chance to remember past glories, drink, wear a pilotka and, for those of us disposed to that kind of thing, ooh and aah at the squat-turreted tanks and phallic missiles clanking and clattering their way through the city.

Sergei Parkhomenko and the Protest Movement in Russia



“What can Russians do to express themselves? Be political.”

Raising and answering this crucial question, Sergei Parkhomenko spoke this past Monday at the Jordan Center about the recent protest movement in Russia. According to Parkhomenko, Russia’s leadership has spent the past twelve years trying to dismantle the country’s political system. However, more and more Russians are coming to understand that politics is their business and that the struggle for rights belongs to them. Over the course of two hours, Parkhomenko addressed two main questions: what recent changes have led to this new atmosphere in Russia and how can this new atmosphere continue to thrive?
