Willard Sunderland is Associate Professor and Department Head of the Department of History at the University of Cincinnati. His research focuses on the history of the Russian Empire in the imperial era. He is author of Taming the Wild Field: Colonization and Empire on the Russian Steppe (Cornell, 2004); and co-editor of Peopling the Russian Periphery: Borderland Colonization in Eurasian History (Routlege, 2007); and Russia’s People of Empire: Life Stories from Eurasia, 1500 to the Present (Indiana, 2012). His newest book, The Baron’s Cloak: A History of the Russian Empire in War and Revolution will be published next year by Cornell University Press.
