The Idea of the ‘Russian World’ and the Orthodox Church

April 29, 2015 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Join us on April 29, 2015 for a discussion with Dr. Thomas Bremer on “The Idea of the ‘Russian World’ and the Orthodox Church”.

The civilizing concept of a “Russian World” (“russkiy mir”) has played a more and more prominent role in the last years in the Russian political discourse. But also representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, which joined the foundation “Russian World” officially in 2009, frequently have referred in their more recent statements to this “Russian World” which is said to be different from the Western civilization, and also superior to it. This presentation will present and analyse the Church’s position towards this concept.

Thomas Bremer is Professor of Ecumenical Theology, Eastern Churches Studies and Peace Studies, Münster University, Germany. His areas of interest are the history of Orthodoxy in Russia and in the Balkans, the impact of religion on political processes, and the theory of ecumenical processes. He has been widely published in these areas.

Cosponsored by the NYU Religious Studies Program.
