GLBT Rights in Russia

October 4, 2013 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Save the date and join us for a panel discussion on the continuing unrest surrounding GLBT rights in Russia.

Long at the margins of Russian society lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people have recently become a flashpoint in the country’s political culture.  After the decade of relative tolerance following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation under Vladimir Putin has begun to target homosexuality as a “social ill.”  A series of regional laws culminated in the recent adoption of a ban on “homosexual propaganda among minors,” which as been followed up by a proposal to take children away from gay and lesbian parents. This roundtable examines the roots of this apparent upsurge in homophobia, the place(s) of LGBT people in today’s Russia, and the political ramifications of these new laws both domestically and internationally.

Panelists will include:

Brian Baer (Kent State)
Anna Fishzon (Williams)
Roman Utkin (Yale)
Eliot Borenstein (NYU)
