RT, Sputnik, Russia Beyond the Headlines… In recent times Russian media have stepped up their efforts to reach audiences beyond the borders of the Russian Federation. In the West, these organizations are often branded as Russian propaganda and dismissed as mouthpieces for the Kremlin. But is that really all there is to them? The NYU Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia and Global and Joint Program Studies at Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute host a panel aimed at unveiling differences, aims and challenges faced by Russian outlets targeting foreign audiences.
Russian journalism emerges from a different tradition, with distinct missions, and these are obscured when subjected to a specifically American journalistic ethos and standard. Taking this into account, how does the work of outlets like RT relate the journalistic profession and notions of propaganda and soft power? The discussion will attempt to engage and critique common assumptions regarding this specific form of media, focusing on the nature of journalism in a Russian context.
