The War in Ukraine was supposed to last 72 hours according to the projections of American intelligence services. In effect it has gone for a month, with the Ukrainians refusing to surrender to the forces of an overwhelming military foe arrayed against them. President Volodymyr Zelensky found himself in the midst of world historical situation and has remarkably transformed himself into a war time president. This talk will discuss the state of the construction of the Ukrainian political nation in the midst of a war for survival and what it means that the wartime leadership class of the nation is heavily composed of Russian speakers with Jewish roots.

Vladislav Davidzon is a nonresident fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, based in France. He is European culture correspondent for Tablet Magazine and founded the Odessa Review and served as its chief editor until July 2018. He is the author of From Odessa With Love. His work has been featured in numerous publications, including the Wall Street Journal, BookforumWorld Policy Journal, the New York Observer, and the American Interest. Davidzon holds a master’s degree in human rights and democratization from the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights in Italy and earned his bachelor’s degree at the City University of New York.
