Join us for another 19v seminar!

Unlike his History of the Russian State, which was immediately understood as a political text and translated as such, Karamzin's Letters of a Russian Traveler is traditionally seen as a neutral political object, a by-product of Sterne's Sentimental Journey to France and Italy with very limited political implications. This talk aims at showing, on the contrary, that the three 19th-century French translators of Karamzin's travelogue actually followed specific political agendas, widely determined by the geopolitical context of their respective times and that their translations, far from being the innocent products of their sole literary curiosity, promoted their own political interests or the interests of their translation patrons.

This event will be held virtually as a Zoom meeting.
