Lukas Brasiskis is a PhD candidate in the Department of Cinema Studies at NYU. His work examines contemporary eco-cinema with an emphasis on East-Central European films. His dissertation, currently in progress, is titled “Environmental Memories in East Central European Films.”
All the Russias is pleased to announce an event held this Friday, November 15, in NYU's Tisch School of the Arts (721 Broadway, 7th Floor) at 6 PM. Part of an international research project spanning two years (2017-2019), "Everyday and the Experience of War in Late Modernity" will analyze visual representations —films and video art — pertaining to the experience of war in Eastern Europe.
Speakers include Nerijus Milerius (Department of Philosophy, Vilnius University), Agnė Narušytė (Department of Art History, Vilnius Art Academy) and Lukas Brasiskis (Department of Cinema Studies, New York University, Research Affiliate at Vilnius University). Talks will be accompanied by clips from films by Andrei Tarkovsky (Russia), Sergei Loznitsa (Ukraine), László Nemes (Hungary) and Deimantas Narkevičius (Lithuania). Presentations will be followed by discussion and Q&A.
Nerijus Milerius will analyze films by Ukrainian film director Sergei Loznitsa that capture the internalization of war trauma. Milerius will examine how his films portray the logic of radical alteration of social interaction, and their inability to recognize the traumatic experience that has led to the repression of memory in Russia.
Agnė Narušytė will examine the duality of peacetime/wartime for "cyclothymic" military institutions as represented in photography and film.
Lukas Brasiskis will present on works by contemporary Eastern European filmmakers who have reflected war indirectly, without displaying its atrocities.
The event is hosted by NYU Tisch School of the Arts and co-organized by the Department of Cinema Studies at NYU and Vilnius University, in connection with the forthcoming volume Everyday and the Experience of War in Late Modernity, published with the support of the Lithuanian Council of Science.
